Journey through Ancient Greece

Some places to eat in Athens

This is just a small selection of ones we have tried or have been recommended.

To Athinaikón: to Aqhnaikon, 2 Themistokleous, corner of Panepistimiou (near Plateia Omónia) ' 38 38 485. Very stylish decor, marble tables, walls covered in old posters. Popular with locals, fills up after 10pm. Wide choice of unusual dishes, excellent food at average prices. We recommend the calamari, sardines and crab and shrimp croquettes. This is an ouzerie so there is a large selection of ouzos. http://www.athinaiko.gr/

O Platanos: O Platanos, 4 Diogenes. Plaka, ' 32 20 666, Near the 'tower of the winds'. The oldest taverna in Athens (established in 1932). Excellent food, lunch and evening. Lamb or veal with peas, okra or beans are a speciality. Tables under the Plane tree (O Platanos) and indoors. Popular with locals. Closed on Sundays

Xynos: 4 Angelou Geronta, Plaka, (off Adrianou Street), ' 32 21 065 Tricky to find as it is rather hidden but all the other restaurants know it and will tell you the way! One of our favourites, super food served in the garden if warm enough. Good atmosphere and two really miserable but talented musicians! Beware, some of the starters are very substantial and you must leave room for the main course!. A little more expensive than some, maybe Ł10 each, but worth it. Closed Saturday and Sunday

Stamatopoulou: 26 Lissou Plaka, A large outside raised terrace, good food, friendly service, sometimes live music (and customers dancing).

Taverna Sigalas: Monastiraki, At the end of Athenas, close to the metro station, this taverna is bustling at lunch and in the evening with tables crammed on the pavement. Often musicians, accordion and guitar, good traditional food.

Milton's: 91 Adrianou, Plaka, near the Mitropolis. Rather upmarket setting and service, excellent food; they're very proud of their seafood which is good but pricey. It's easy to get carried away and end up with the sort of bill you'd expect from a modest Italian at home! Live pianist.

Eden: Lissiou, Plaka, Athens' first vegetarian restaurant, is highly recommended. Varied menu at modest prices. www.edenvegetarian.gr

Old Taverna Kritikou: rooftop taverna in the Plaka with live music and dancing on Saturday night. Good souvlaki. Buzzing with locals after 11.00pm!

Colonaki (sic) Tops: In the elegant quarter of Kolonaki, near the Benaki and Cycladic museums. One of several restaurants in the square. We had wonderful artichokes and a large plate of baked sardines.

Benaki Museum Kolonaki: The restaurant on a rooftop terrace with views of the Acropolis is stylish but not pricey. Good salads, selection of hot dishes and local wine.

O Platon: Kladou 8, Monastiraki, tel: 210 3219 361, close to the Agora, excellent food; a traditional taverna where you go into the kitchen to choose.

Dia Tavta, Adrianou 35-37, opposite the Stoa of Attalos, the second taverna along Adrianou. Very good food, nice bread, large jugs of cold water, excellent salads, local wine (the white wine is particularly good), friendly service.

Old Taverna Kritikou: rooftop taverna in the Plaka with live music and dancing on Saturday night. Good souvlaki. Buzzing with locals after 11.00pm!

Benaki Museum: Kolonaki, The restaurant on a roof top terrace with views of the Acropolis is stylish but not pricey. Good salads, selection of hot dishes and local wine.

Vangellis & Yios Larnakos 8 & Acharnon 238 (Ay. Nikolaos) ': 8618 754.
An off the tourist track taverna serving good traditional Greek food. Musicians play the bazouki and kythera and the locals and Christos will teach you to dance! Not within walking distance; easy to get to by metro or a taxi is not expensive.
